Map Boards Special Feature

Nordenmark Classic – 99 Euro

The main selling point of this board is the ease of removal.  A base part is attached to the bars and stays there to which the actual board attaches with a quick-release clamp.  This is the board I've used for years and love this flexibility of being able to whip it off for the journey home.  The ARN board does a similar thing with the clamp, and the Orifix board offers thumb screws, but none are quite as quick as the Nordenmark.  The attachment does, of course, make the board heavier.

The clamp itself is very versatile; clamping the bars between two plates and so will fit all bar sizes.

The board is wide enough for A4, and almost long enough to hold a full sheet, but a few cms need folding over at the ends to fit under the cover.  The cover is permanently attached along one edge, and uses a pair of poppers along the other three sides.  This keeps the map very snug and dry and I've never had a problem with water getting in.  The board isn't as rigid as some here and there is a bit of movement at the corners.

(Ed. This is the board of choice for top AR teams. All 6 of the top teams at the AR World Champs in Tasmania used it.)

Nordenmark Light - 39 Euro

The name of this board sums it up – light.  Unfortunately it's at the cost of a small board which is rather flexible.

The clamp is very versatile, trapping the bar between two pieces of metal and so will fit pretty much all bar sizes.  The clamp is very short, putting the board only a couple of cms above the bar.  The board is fairly small, only taking an A5 map without folding.  The cover sheet holds the map firmly in place, but doesn't wrap under the actual board so water can get in at the edges.

This board is perfectly functional and for roads or light off-road with a small map is all that is required.  However, it is certainly a budget option and can't match the performance of the others here.

The phrase 'it does what it says on the tin' applies perfectly to this board – light and cheap.  As a budget board it's perfect.
