Competitors will be racing for extra kudos at the 2018 X-Adventure Dunsborough off-road triathlon with the race newly slated as an official qualifying event for the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Cross Triathlon World Championships as well as being the WA State Championships.

Returning for its sixth year in 2018, this adventure weekend is already recognised as Australia’s largest off-road triathlon with over 1,500 competitors but the new titles of World Championships qualifier and WA State Championships are added recognition to this popular event.

The weekend includes long and short course races, two kids’ events plus the all-new Aquathon-X which is added for the first time in 2018, also a world qualifier.

X-Adventure Dunsborough is the ultimate mix of triathlon and adventure racing; featuring ocean swimming, trail running and mountain bike riding.

Dunsborough is arguably one of the most spectacular settings of any race in the world with the course passing through the pristine coastal wilderness of Geographe Bay and Meelup Regional Park.

Sam Maffett, Event Manager from Race organisers Rapid Ascent said he was excited to announce entries are now open to the sixth edition of X-Adventure Dunsborough.

“The landscape around Dunsborough is perfect for the X-Adventure races, the water is crystal clear, the granite coastline provides superb trail running and some of WA’s best mountain biking is right on the door step. This helps us set a world class course for these World Championship qualifying events,” Maffett said.

“Athletes of all abilities are welcome. Some of Australia’s fastest off-road racers will be up-front but the race atmosphere is very inclusive and encouraging of all athletes, especially with the popular teams categories meaning people need only do one leg to still be involved.”

The premier event, the X-Adventure Long Course includes 34kms of action with a 1500m ocean swim, 12km coastal trail run, and 20km mountain bike. It attracts a range of racers from corporate relay teams through to weekend warriors and elite athletes.

The half distance X-Adventure Short Course was designed to form a pathway into the sport of cross-triathlon and is ideal for off-road converts, novices as well as younger participants. It consists of a 700m ocean swim, 6km coastal trail run and 11km mountain bike.

New in 2018 is the Aquathon-X, a 1,000m ocean swim followed by a 5km coastal trail run, scheduled so that participants can race the short course on Saturday and the Aquathon on Sunday for a double-header weekend. Open to individuals and teams of two, the Aquathon-X is a qualifying event for the ITU Aquathlon World Championships.

The weekend also includes two events designed especially for kids meaning that the sporting stars of tomorrow have a chance to join the fun.

The extremely popular Kids X-Adventure features a 200m swim, 2.5km trail run and 4km mountain bike and regularly attracts over 300 kids, whilst the Groms X-Adventure provides the perfect introduction to off-road adventures for kids up to 8 years of age with an 800m trail run and 1200m mountain bike (no swim).

The home of X-Adventure; Dunsborough’s Geographe Bay coastline is one of Western Australia’s most popular holiday destinations, located just 30 minutes from Margaret River in the state’s South West. With stunning scenery, cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, beautiful wineries, and range of accommodation and things to do, competitors and spectators are in for a fabulous weekend down south.
