One of 4 new Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) demonstration races this year is the ‘Raid Del Viento’ in Argentina and from October 9th to 14th international athletes from around the world will head to Patagonia to compete.

The new ‘Raid of the Wind’ is a non-stop 300km expedition race where teams of 4 will race to complete a multi-disciplinary course including trekking, kayaking, mountain biking, snowshoeing,  rope ascents and other special challenges which the teams will not know about until the race begins.

Navigation in the mountain and wilderness areas in which the race takes place is also going to be a vital part of the expedition race.

Race Director Daniel Pincu, himself an experienced World Series racer, explains, “Teams will have to navigate cross-country making strategic choices and will be travelling day and night through terrain which is rarely visited. They will have specially prepared maps and will be going where very few have trodden before them.  There will often be no paths to follow, they must choose their own way.”

The race will take place in the Neuquen province of Argentinean Patagonia from the town of Chos Malal.  The town will be the base for a race which will take teams into the surrounding ‘Cordillera de Viento’ to experience the summits, valleys, rivers and lakes of this Andean wilderness paradise.  The course will remain secret until teams arrive but they do know the high point will be the 3600m peak of volcano.

The new race has a US $10,000 prize fund and will be limited to just 30 places, which are already filling fast, and the winners will also be guaranteed an entry into the AR World Championships.

Entry is via the race website at www.raidelviento.com and the price for a team entry begins at just $US 1500 for a basic entry.  There are also other fully-serviced entry options which including food accommodation and transfers, and which will suit visiting international teams.

Prices for all entries will increase after March 31st so teams are advised to enter early to get a place and to secure the best price.

All entries include specially prepared maps, the provision of kayaks and snowshoes, satellite tracking (with YB Tracking) and a fully serviced course. (No support teams are permitted on the race.)

Among those already entered are Team Adventure Medical Kits (USA) who are ranked second in the world and Pincu and the race organisation are keen to host teams from around the world.

“This region of Patagonia is an amazing place to hold an expedition adventure race,” Pincu said, “and we are looking forward to welcoming racers to a course which will show them the very best of the region and challenge them to their limits. It will be an unforgettable adventure in Argentina!”
