Raid the North Extreme - The Start

The race started under a beautiful sunrise and with calm water. With the Haida Heritage Cultural Centre as a backdrop, the teams lined up at the high tide mark. At 0600 the teams raced down the beach to their inflatable kayaks and paddled on to the first leg of the race. Not all teams were “quick off the mark�. One team appeared to have a few problems and was left behind on the beach. Not a real problem this early in the race.

En route to Checkpoint 1, at Jakes Landing in Skidegate Channel, the group split apart with a spread of an hour and forty minutes between the first and last team with Team Sole leading the pack. Helly Hansen / Momar must have had some problems as they arrived at CP1 in last place almost 40 minutes behind the second last team.

The teams dropped have dropped their kayaks and are now heading to an unmanned checkpoint on top of a 3500 ft. mountain peak where they will find a code word which will enable them to pass through checkpoint 3. CP2 is unmanned so we won’t hear any more news for a few hours until they reach CP3.
