Day 3 - Puffing and blowing

Pyro / 05.07.2008See All Event Posts Follow Event
Day 3 of the Hebridean Challenge saw the weather beginning to improve. The rain that had plagued the first half of the race had begun to subside, which was good news for the kayakers as they began their first serious paddling of the week. They started from Tarbert heading along the coast first to the old whaling station at Ceann an Ora, then continuing in staged sections round towards Amhainn Suidhe Castle.

The MTBers would get their first proper taste of the Harris and Lewis hills, riding a route used in the past as the MTB Time Trial. Their loop from Druim na Chaoraich over two high passes, skirting the edge of Stuabhal, then ending along the gravel track at Glean Mhiabhaig was complicated by the weather still, riders struggling against a strong headwind for the whole of the 7km gravel track. They also battled the wind on their later stage, riding from the hydro power station above Loch Leosaid up to a checkpoint just below the largest overhanging rock face in Britain at Sron Ulladale.
