Missed Turns On The Penultimate Stage
Press Release / 17.02.2018
The Coastal Challenge 2018 group began to crumble today. Heat and difficult terrain have made their mark this year. This was the longest stage of # TCC2018 at 50km, and it was an awesome day.
Most of the route of the fifth stage was runnable, which is good for those competitors who can hold speed on the gravel ground, but equally it was a challenging day because competitors have now covered 200km of mountains and coasts in the heat.
After a journey of 25km on mountain and gravel roads, competitors reached the coast. Upon reaching the coast a rowboat was waiting for competitors to cross before the final 10km to the finish. The water crossing gave competitors an opportunity to rest and refresh, and though short it was an extremely important part of this stage of the journey.
The final section was a combination of trail and beach to reach the community of Drake Bay, where the competition will end tomorrow.
With just 22.5km remaining before the finish the standings changed. Jorge Paniagua and British racer Marcus Scotney did not notice a turn and finished the journey without reaching one of the aid stations, so they were disqualified. Both Scotney and Paniagua had a great race, Scotney was in the third position and fighting for the title. American Mike Wardian jumped to third place.
In the women’s race Ragna Debats continued in first position and will, undoubtedly be the next champion of The Coastal Challenge tomorrow.
