It is only a week to go for Ciutadella to witness the start of the 4th edition of the CamelBak Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º. A unique team race, on foot or MTB, in three stages which will tour Menorca the 3nd, 3rd and 4th of March

A total of 214 brave athletes will live the “ one island, three stages, and epic adventure “, in addition to an unforgettable experience of coexistence and fellowship, not  only with the other member of the team,  but also with the rest of the participants. It is the spirit that characterizes this test, which also allows to discover some of the dreamy landscapes of Menorca.

Participation

The CamelBak Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º will bring more renowned participants than ever before. Despite the fact that registration is open to all types of competitors, from the most competitive to those who prefer to enjoy practicing their favorite sport, the test has attracted in this edition several “ elite “ participants.

In the Mountainbike category, Ismael Ventura, current  Spanish MTB Marathon champion teaming up with Oliver Avilés will be on the start line. Mònica Aguilera, the multifaceted athlete,  winner of the Marathon des Sables 2010 and famous raider among many other successes, teaming up with Jordi Jimenez will not miss this years edition. Other competitive teams will be Oscar Mogollón (dominator of MTB races in the  Balearic Islands) , Antoni Pascual (second in 2017) and Albert Roca (former world adventure raids champion) who will take on his third CamelBak Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º.

With regards the Trailrun category,  Isusko Barrenetxea and Roberto Garay, winners of the 2017 edition are back , as well as locals Álex Urbina and Javi Pons. In total there will be athletes coming from eight different countries.

The Camí de Cavalls

The  Camí de Cavalls (GR-223) follows the perimeter of the island through a coastline mostly virgin and a multitude of small solitary coves and corners. In some sections, the Camí also moves away from the sea, it enters the interior of the island and passes through  wet areas, forests and ravines. In this way, the road leads through to the great diversity of landscapes and ecosystems of the island. Moreover, the Camí de Cavalls  portrays a great deal of the wealth of the ethnological,  historical and cultural heritage of Menorca, built above all on the basis of the omnipresent dry stone. Its origin is uncertain and is surrounded by legend. Could be traced back to the chivalry, for the defense of the island around the 14th century.

At present time, the 360º through the Camí de Cavalls has become a  hiking, trail running and MTB  path recognized at international level.

3 stages - 3 modalities

The route of the CamelBak Epic Camí de Cavalls 360º is distributed in three stages over three consecutive days and is based in large part on the path of the Camí de Cavalls. At the end of each stage, the race family will meet at dinner, briefing and overnight in Es Mercadal, sharing anecdotes of the day and the atmosphere. Each stage consists of three journeys with slight differences, specifically designed for each of the three categories: TrailRun, Mountain biking and Experience.

Stage 1  (TrailRun: 44,8 km & 549 m of ascent. MountainBike: 64,3 km & 936 m. Experience: 33 km & 526 m), Friday 2nd of March, departs from Ciutadella ( Artrutx for the Experience category ) and ends in Es Migjorn. Initially covering  the west of Menorca, to continue by the untouched southern half of the island, characterized by the stretches of limestone, the beaches of fine and white sand, surrounded by pine forests and the many and deep ravines that give character to his relief; and finally goes up the Barranco de Binigaus. Ciutadella, the Cap d'Artutx, Son Saura, Macarella, Cala Galdana or Binigaus are some of the points of reference of this section.

Stage 2 (TrailRun: 57,5 km & 1.349 m. MountainBike: 71,5 km & 1.543 m. Experience: 33,1 km & 891 m),Saturday 3rd of March, will take the participants  from Calespiques (El Pilar for those at the Experience category ) to  Es Mercadal. It is a stage of great contrasts, with landscapes of great character and a wild coastline guarded only by the lonely lighthouses of Punta Nati and Cavalleria. Possibly  the most demanding and captivating stage of the race, which runs the entire length of the calcareous platform of the Northwest of Menorca, passing through places such as Cala Morell, Alocs or Binimel·là.

Stage 3 (TrailRun: 54,4 km & 853 m. MountainBike: 54,4 km & 853 m. Experience: 38,5 km & 551 m), Sunday 4th of March, it runs from the port of Maó (Es Grau for the Experience category ) to Es Mercadal. In its first section, it does not follow the GR-223, to join the path into the Albufera des Grau Natural park, the most important natural area of the island. Favaritx or S'Arenal d'en Castell are other highlights of this section, where in its final stretch does not follow the Camí de Cavalls.
