HUAIRASINCHI
Day 1 - Bad Weather, Close Racing
Press Release / 30.04.2017
Today, Saturday 29 April at 7am, HUAIRASINCHI Movistar 2017 began. The starting line was located in the small indigenous community of Zuleta in the northern Ecuadorian highlands. The first section was a 62 km trekking loop up into the mountains around the community, through paramo grasslands, to the hidden Puruhanta Lake. Teams then descend through a pass through the Runahuañuna Mountain saddle back to Zuleta. The first teams are expected into the transition area around 2am on Sunday morning.
The first teams to reach Control Point 4 around 5pm on the shores of the Puruhanta Lake were the Ecuadorian team Terra Aventura, the Czech team Fenix Multisport, and San Jan Aventura 1 from Argentina. The race is still very close at this point and most teams are racing together in a tight pack. Poor weather conditions has slowed teams down, and low reception means the trackers are unable to update regularly until teams get down out of the mountains.
Tomorrow teams are expected into the first transition area where they will pick up their bikes and complete a short 17-kilometer mountain bike to the Hacienda San Juan de la Vega where they will complete another mountain trek.
