HUAIRASINCHI
Tough Conditions and Many Retirements in the Early Stages
Press Release / 01.05.2017
On the second day of the HUAIRASINCHI Movistar 2017 adventure race, the first teams arrived at Transition Area 1 early in the morning in the indigenous community of Zuleta, after a long trek through the high altitude paramo.
The first team to arrive was Terra Aventura – Finalin at 3:10, followed by the French team Agde Raid Aventure, and the Ecuadorian team Movistar. This section was complicated by severe weather, and some teams withdrew from the race because of physical exhaustion, the cold, and other factors: 5 Fairis Uniandes, 8 Seti 1 Colombia, 9 Papacara, 13 Afterwork Athletes, 14 Yuma Adventure Team, 16 San Juan Aventura 1, 18 Cayman AT, 20 Ñongo Ñongo, and 22 Texticom Anima Invita Cicloide.
In the morning and afternoon teams continued onto the second section a short 21-kilometer mountain bike leg from Zuleta to the San Juan de la Vega Hacienda where they did a trekking loop of 26 kilometers up and around the Cusin Hill. Afterwards they returned to the Hacienda to pick up their bikes and continue 11 kilometers to the edge of the San Pablo Lake near the famous indigenous town of Otavalo. Here teams had to complete an orienteering circuit in the lake, visiting the checkpoints around the lakeshore for a route of about 15 kilometers.
At 9:30pm, the last three teams had arrived in Zuleta at TA1 and were resting before beginning the first mountain bike leg: these were Skyrunners – Xpedition, Saferbo Seti Colombia, and Quest Adventure Team.
Several teams still remained on the Cusin trekking section: Fenix Multisport, Cats Adventure Team, Ideal Alambrec, Mountain Race Company/MainNerve, BendRacing/YogaSlackers, and Guambras Bluecard.
Meanwhile, the first teams had arrived at the kayak section and some had already begun the paddle: Terra Aventura – Finalin, Agde Raid Aventure, and Ñaupak Pastaza South Adventure Team leading the way.
