HUAIRASINCHI
Course Shortened Due To Bad Weather
Press Release / 01.05.2017
In the early hours of day 3, race organizers made the decision to modify the remaining stages in the race due to weather conditions and the subsequent lack of access required for stage 7.
As teams exited the kayak stage, they were informed that Stage 7 would be eliminated and that the course would be modified. The modification was made due to security concerns based on current weather conditions. As a result of this modification, the next stage in the race became the final stage, with 140 km of mountain biking.
Initially teams were supposed to transition from the kayaks to their mountain bikes for 79 km to the next TA. There they would then have had to complete a 22 km hike in the paramo to the Piñan refuge, followed by a loop back to their bikes to continue 73 km to the finish line in Hosteria San Francisco. With the modification, checkpoints 25, 26 and the orienteering points in stage 7 were replaced by an orienteering flag as the new CP 25.
In response to these modifications, teams also have had to modify their strategy, and thus the race for first place is once again wide open, favoring strong bikers. Teams 10 and 2, Terra Aventura Finalin from Ecuador and the French team Agde Raid Aventure are both in the running for this position, followed closely by team 3 Fenix Multisport from the Czech Republic.
