Stage One is Run and Done!
Press Release / 16.08.2017
The Eureka! Stage One is run and done! Congrats to all runners for completing this hard stage! Today was no easy battle-the climb up to CP1 was brutal but the weather was quite nice.
350+ runners hit the streets of Buena Vista through the iconic TRR arch to start their epic adventure, before crossing the Arkansas River and then onto single-track and a with a seven-mile climb. CP 1 was a welcome sight; runners refueled on GU and awesome snacks before traversing 1,000-foot (304 meter) descent, with epic scenery of the Buena Vista's 14ers. Stage One is notorious for being one of the hottest days, but this year the weather was more agreeable. The last four miles was a grueling false flat on County Road that led runners into the finish arch at Railroad Bridge.
Finishers were treated to GU recovery fuel, fresh fruits, and even a dip in the ice-cold Arkansas River. Post-plunge, runners rested at Eureka! Basecamp where massages, showers and naps awaited them. Thank you to Eureka! For providing over 300 tents this year. With Eureka! Basecamp, runners will have time to relax and chat over a few beers, listen to live music, and get to know all 350+ runners sharing the same experience.
The first day of racing saw some fierce competition right out of the gates. On the team side of things Katie Schide and Germain Grangier of Team Inov8 landed on top of the OX podium today in a time of 3:08:01. The GU Crew of Keely Henninger and Amanda Basham ran a speedy 3:07:06 to best their competition in the OW division, while the Pima Pirates, Charlie Ware and Catlow Shipek, snagged the top spot in the OM category today, with a smokin' fast 2:45:21.
The Run 6 Solo categories saw some gutsy performances today. TRR veteran Judy Carter took the top spot for the Run 6 Solo 50+ in 4:10:34 and Blaise Brochard garnered the top spot for men in the Run 6 Solo 50+ with his 3:04 performance. Adidas Outdoors's Stephanie Weigel will take the run 6 Open leaders' jersey into Stage Two after her 3:11:22. Chad Trammell, of the Alaska Endurance Project will be donning the Run 6 Open Men's jersey with his blazing fast 2:27:40.
