At 7:30 this morning, runners geared up in downtown Leadville to take on stage three of the TransRockies Run. At 10,200 ft elevation in Leadville, runners had some thin and chilly air to kick off their 24.4-mile trek to Camp Hale. At 8 a.m. sharp, the starting gun went off to cheer on the athletes. For those running the RUN6, today marks their halfway point. For RUN3 runners, today is the final day of their three-day journey.

Runners took off with a 2.5-mile warm up run out of Leadville. After some road miles were over runners hit single-track trail beginning their first, and largest climb of the day - a three-mile continuous uphill. Once reaching the top of climb one, runners descended down a double track trail leading to the first checkpoint, which featured an 80's theme and a lot of awesome volunteers. After fuelling up on GU, runners continued through Ski Cooper on rolling terrain making their way to Checkpoint two, which offered great views and was a perfect spot to re-fuel again before enjoying the decent.

The run to the final checkpoint was a scenic route on the Colorado Trail offering great scenery and pretty wildflowers. After passing through checkpoint three at mile 21 the TransRockies finish arch at Camp Hale was in sight--just three dirt-road miles away but for runners - can seem like forever.

As finishers rolled through the arch, you could see the hard work, relief and joy in runner's facesand bodies. After the awards ceremony, the 3rdannual beer mile took place. If you're not familiar with the beer mile it involves drinking a beer 4 times over the course of a mile. Not an easy task - especially at elevation and after a hard stage. At just over 9 hours, the last runner approached the arch and a tunnel of love was formed to welcome her into Camp Hale.  It was surely a special TransRockies moment.

Tomorrow RUN6 racers will continue their six-day trek with stage four. With an 8am start from Nova Guides/Camp Hale, runners will travel to Red Cliff covering 14.2 miles and 2,800 feet of elevation gain.

The end of day three means we say congratulations and goodbye to all RUN3 athletes. Thank you all RUN3 runners for a great 2017 TransRockies Run and we hope to see you all next year!

Stage Preview

Kahtoola Stage 4: Nova Guides at Camp Hale to Red Cliff

The Kahtoola Stage 4 is very similar to Stage 2: short and steep with 14.5 miles (23.3km) and 2,800' feet elevation gain (854m) of elevation gain. It does top out a little lower, at 11,700'. The first two miles are rolling and then progressively steeper as you work your way up Hornsilver Mountain. Remember to bring enough water for 12 miles, since supplies are limited at Checkpoint 1. There are some amazing views at the top but watch for loose footing on the way down; this stage has bloodied knees and elbows in the past.  Wearyman Creek runs down the middle of the trail; plan on getting a little wet.  On the positive side, the water is never more than knee deep and can be very refreshing for hot, tired feet.

Start Time: 8:00am
Distance: 14.5 miles, 23.3 km
Elevation Gain: 2,800 feet, 854 m

Weather: Expect a milder night tonight with lows in the 40's, with light winds of 5-10mph. Tomorrow it will be partly sunny with highs near 64. There's a 20% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
