The adrenalin is pumping as adventure racers from all over Australia today learned their fate for the next five days as the top-secret Canberra race route for the Wildside Adventure Race (WildsideAR) 2017  by Fully Rad Adventures was revealed.

Twenty teams comprising four people each will head off at 7am tomorrow morning, Monday 2nd October, to traverse ten legs covering a distance of 400 kilometres. The adventure race will include flat water paddling, white water paddling, abseiling, mountain biking, pack rafting and trekking in and around the ACT.

The race route was revealed today at the competitor’s briefing at WildsideAR Headquarters, Ibis Eaglehawk. Competitors will journey form the edge of Lake Eucumbene in the Snowies, past the giant trout in Adaminaby, across Yaouk and into the bottom of the ACT through the Namadgi National Park. Travelling along the Naas River Valley, teams will explore the Ororal Valley on the edge of the Bimberi Wilderness, with an abseil off Booroomba Rocks.

From there the race heads in to Tidbinbilla, across to Cotter Dam and then down to the Murrumbidgee River. Competitors will packraft the river towards the northern edge of the ACT where the race then takes an urban turn – a staged traverse of the city of Canberra including a paddle on Lake Burley Griffin and mandatory visits to some famous landmarks before finishing back in Sutton.

“These competitors are incredibly strong mentally and physically. They will travel further than most do in a year, and go to places in and around Canberra that many have never seen,” said Richard Old of Fully Rad Adventures.

The race legs are a 55km trek, 107km mountain bike, 50km trek and abseil, 50km mountain bike, 33km pack raft, 10km trek, 45km mountain bike, 14km paddle, 10km urban rogaine (orienteering) and a final 26km mountain bike. Competitors will have very little sleep over the race period, and what they do get they must strategise for so as not to lose time.

“Along the way competitors will pass through small communities, and then Canberra city, as ambassadors for the sport. They will race in remote and challenging areas and we look forward to seeing them all at the finish line on Thursday or Friday,” said Richard.

Anyone and everyone can watch the teams’ progress throughout the race via a live site on the WildsideAR website www.wildsideadventurerace.com.au which will be active from race commencement. As teams carry GPS trackers, you can follow the team dots as they move across the course maps.
