Multiplex Avon Descent
SleepMonsters Aust / 07.05.2006
This years race is on the 5th and 6th of August, run over 2days, the event starts at Northam on the Avon River and finishes in Perth 134km downstream on the Swan River.Attracting paddlers from around the globe this event has seen kayakers come from UK, USA, South Africa and Ireland to name a few. Not to mention the cream of the Australian paddling scene and has been the training ground for some of the best kayakers in the country.
In 2004 the event attracted 516 craft (kayaks), if that doesnt make it hard enough i didnt mention the 64 power boats that also took part that year, thankfully they have their own start.
The race itself as mentioned covers 134kms, the first day takes competitors 57kms from the town of Northam to cobbler pool 20km west of Toodyay, on route competitors have to contend with Northam weir as well as the famous Extracts weir and then there are the Ti trees, which is comparable to a liquid maze with numerous false channels. Day 2is 76kms which starts out calmly but its not long before competitors are faced with some major obstacles in the form of Supershoot, Emu Falls, Championship Rapids and Bells Rapids, not long after the river opens up and its a 30km obstacle free drag to the finish.
Entries open on the 21st of May so be sure to get in early and be sure if you are travelling from interstate to get those cheap flights booked early.
