Irish Championships Launched
Rob / 11.12.2002
First we had the World Championships, then the British Championships – and now we have the Irish Championships! And somehow Brian Elliot races are in all of them! This time he’s teamed up with Greg Clarke, who has competed in every Adrenalin Rush, to put together a 5 race series on a similar format to BARC and it starts early – the first 36 hour race is on February 22/23rd 2003 in Glengarriff, County Cork.
This is the first of three races being staged in the Republic by Clarke’s company, ‘Adventure Ireland’ and the series is completed with two more races in Ulster staged by Elliot’s ‘Adventure Sports One’. The last race in the series will be the final in County Fermanagh, and this will also be one of the BARC qualifying races, linking the British and Irish Championships together.
Clarke describes the initial events as “an opportunity to get people involved, to let them have a go and see if they like it†and the championship will be decided on the final race.
To encourage everyone to have a go the races will have a traditional 4 person team category, but also classes for male, female and mixed pairs. The cost is €120 (about £75) per person and the first 10 entries for the February race will get a free pair of Sealskinz mid-light waterproof socks.
The dates and venues are:
22 – 23rd Feb, Glenarriff, Co Cork
22 - 23rd March, Co Antrim.
12 - 13th April, Co Wicklow
12 - 13th July, Co Kerry
2 - 4 August 2003, Co Fermanagh, Championship Final.
