Trailplus Team Up with Sweatshop
Rob / 06.04.2003
The Trailplus one-day series for this year has both a new venue and a new sponsor, the retailers Sweatshop. The new venue for all 3 races isn’t far from last year’s at Sandhurst and again it’s a military training ground. This time the teams of 3 will be turning up at the Gibraltar Barracks, Yateley, home of the Combat Engineers School. It’s surrounded by forest trails for the running and mountain biking stages and Hawley Lake will offer some more interesting opportunities for canoeing.
As always there will be some special challenges and Event Director, Keith Anderson, commented: “We will be using part of the Army Assault Course as well as constructing a number of our own challenges. The combination of the Army facilities and surrounding area offers the best location for adventure racing we have yet come across.â€
Paul Magner commented, “There is plenty of scope for a serious challenge, but we are very focussed on making the races enjoyable and accessible. If you can run and ride for a few hours you can have a go, and it won’t take the whole weekend or leave you wiped out for days afterwards. It’s fun!†He added, “We will also have more facilities than we did at Sandhurst, a shop on site, changing rooms and closer parking will all make life that bit easier.â€
The new Sweatshop sponsorship is a tie in with a specialist sports shop which is well known for running kit and has a strong presence in fitness clubs. Commenting on their first major Adventure Racing initiative, Sweatshop Managing Director Hugh Brasher said: “The multi-discipline, mixed-terrain challenge of adventure racing is an exciting option and we share TrailPlus’s desire to make adventure racing as accessible and enjoyable as possible to those who don’t necessarily regard themselves as adventure specialists.â€
“Most of our customers incorporate some running and cycling into their fitness regimes and now we can give them a unique and memorable outdoor challenge that will test both body and mind ….. but with a smile on their face!â€
The first of this year’s 3 races is on May 31st and they will include approximately 5-6 miles of trail running, 10-12 miles of mountain biking, and 1-2 miles of flat water canoeing, plus the challenges of course. The cost is £120 per team per event with canoes provided.
