Are You Tough Enough Again?
Rob / 10.07.2003
World travel, fame, forum stardom on SleepMonsters, eating live insects and being shot at are all possibilities if you apply for series 3 of the BBC’s ‘Are You Tough Enough for the SAS’.Yes, the beeb are recruiting again and you’ve only got a few short weeks to decide if you want to go for it. As always they are not saying where it will be, but the application form may give a hint – it asks if you can ski? Of course this could be an SAS type trick to keep you on the wrong foot, so don’t let that put you off. They ask if you can swim too, which is probably essential.
There are a few other obvious requirements, like having a passport and being able to get some time off. Application forms have to be in by the end of July, then they’ll choose 100 for the selection process in August to find their 30 ‘SAS recruits’. This selection will just be one day and last year’s winner, Gill Watson, described the ‘yomp’ over the Brecons as ‘ridiculously easy’, so by AR standards it may not be too demanding. Unless they’ve changed things of course!
After the first two series the organisers know adventure racers (with the right personality) will do well. They stress you need to be very fit but that they are also looking for mental toughness. Team work came into it in the last series too, those our for themselves were soon weeded out.
The tricky bit may be getting 21 days off in October or November to go ‘who knows where’. Understanding bosses and partners might be needed but the lure of seeing you on the telly might bring them around.
If you’ve seen the previous series and really think you are tough enough then get in touch with Sophie Taylor by emailing Sophie Taylor or calling her on 0208 752 4335. (If you’ve never seen the show then go to Amazon and get the DVD or video before applying!)
