Are You a Winter Adventurer?
Rob / 06.08.2003
The search is now on for one man and woman to represent Great Britain in the 2004 Fulda Tyres Extreme Arctic Challenge.Described as†the ultimate outdoor adventureâ€, the event includes a wide range of alpine sporting activities, as well as some off-road extreme driving. (Fulda make tyres.) Teams from around the world, including Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy will compete to win the prize of two Klondike gold nuggets with a combined value of C$10,000 (over £4,000 unless the exchange rate plummets).
During the eight-day trip, competitors will make their way from Skagway/Alaska via Whitehorse straight through the Yukon Territory to the Arctic Circle. Each team will compete in a range of Yukon activities from the traditional (husky sledding, ice climbing, snowshoeing, lighting a camp fire and skiing), to the unusual (car pulling, tyre changing and frozen water skiing). Each challenge is designed to push competitors to their absolute limit, testing strength, stamina, and determination in sub-zero temperatures and extreme terrain.
Barry Nutley, Brand Manager for Fulda UK said: “Next year we mean business. I want the Brits to be in the top three, with a good chance of winning the whole event. We’re looking for people who are fit, fast, have strong winter sports skills and are not afraid of the cold.†[Apparently the performance of the British team earlier this year was a bit woeful – it was just a matter of how much they came last by!]
So, if you think you can do better, pull a couple of cars at sixty below zero, not to mention ski, snowshoe climb and run, contact Caroline Pick via email for further details and an application form (caroline@rbp-ltd.co.uk). You can also look at the website at www.fulda-challenge.com.
Selected applicants will be invited to compete in the first round qualification event to be held in Ellesmere in 6-7 September. Four men and four women will then be chosen to compete in the European qualification event in Solden, Italy on 18-21 September 2003. This is where the Great Britain team will finally be chosen to compete in the Fulda Tyres Extreme Arctic Challenge between 29 January to 7 February 2004.
(If you’re a TV adventure wannabe it clashes with selection for the next Tough Enough for the SAS!)
