Gael Force Gathers Pace
10.08.2006
Something is stirring in Westport. This small, smart town on the lush and rugged West Coast if Ireland has just got a whole lot smarter; following in the footsteps of many global locations that have harnessed the power of adventure, Westport has launched its own adventure race – Gael Force West.Taking place between 02 and 04 September next month, Gael Force is an adventure race with different classes, together with a public adventure festival thrown in for good measure.
Renowned as an area of outstanding beauty, of man made and natural delights and famous for Croagh Patrick, St Patrick’s Holy Mountain, Westport and environs is quite rightly renowned as a fantastically aesthetic destination for Irish and international visitors alike.
This has got to mean good options for racing. It’s virgin territory and the options are large and wide-ranging.
The event has 3 components, comprising 2 exciting adventure race style challenges and a major public “adventure festival†taking place over the whole weekend in a beautiful setting within the grounds of Westport House.
GF6 is a multi sport event open to all. It promises kayaking, biking and running (or hiking) over a way-marked course from beyond Killary all the way back to Westport and taking in a traverse of Croagh Patrick en route. Why 6? Well, that’s the target for the whippet like competitors at the head of the pack – 6 hours to complete the challenge. But those more used to the lounge than the lycra need not worry. This event has been designed for all and can be completed with mates or solo.
