Angela Mudge Crowned 2006 Buff Skyrunner World Champion
02.10.2006
Angela Mudge, one of the world's top mountain runners and a member of the UK's crack adventure running squad, Team Saab Salomon, has been crowned 2006 Buff Skyrunner World Champion, following a podium place at the Mt Kinabalu Climbathon, the toughest and steepest SkyMarathon of the eight race series. She finished in third place in the series final on Saturday 30 October, despite struggling with a knee injury suffered two years ago. That result combined with four straight wins in a row (three of them course records) in previous events in the series, was enough for Mudge to clinch the World Championship title with a total of 456 points. The Scottish runner managed to hold off her nearest rival Corinne Pavre of France, who finished in fourth in the Climbathon and second place in the series with 408 points. Ester Hernandez Casahuga (Catalonia) took third place with 394 points overall.
Team Saab Salomon Team Manager, Tim Lloyd, said today: “This is fantastic news for Angela and for the team. We haven't been able to get in touch with Angela since she took the World Championship crown but I know she will be over the moon. She has taken the Sky Running scene by storm this season, with four straight wins and three course records to her name, and proved herself as one of the best high altitude endurance athletes in the World.
“This sensational achievement is all the more remarkable considering the difficult time that Angela has endured over the last two months. Sadly in August Angela lost her twin sister Janice after a lengthy fight with cancer. Angela was therefore unable to compete in two rounds of the series, meaning that the World title hinged on the final race in Borneo which carried double points.â€
