39 year old Richard Vollebregt of Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands, a local builder and Club President of Southern Highlands Cycling Club, is currently on the ride of his life. Richard, who has been competitively cycling since the age of 13, is contesting the Guiness World record of cycling from Perth to Sydney, a distance of approximately 4000km.

Richard’s plan is to smash the world record, which has been held since 1992. The record is currently held by Tomio Uranyu from Japan, who completed the distance in 9 days, 23 hours and 25 minutes. Richard and his support team left Perth GPO on Friday 13th October 2006 and aim to arrive back at the Sydney GPO on the weekend of 21st or 22nd October 2006.

Richard will leave Perth at approximately 7:00am on the morning of 13th October heading east on the Great Eastern Highway to Coolgardie. He will then follow the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor to Port Augusta. Richard and his team will then make their way across the Sturt Highway, passing Mildura, Robinvale, Hay, Narrandera, Wagga Wagga and Gundagai. The team will then take the Hume Hwy through Yass and Goulburn. Richard plans to leave the Hume Hwy for a small detour through Berrima & Mittagong, his home towns in the Southern Highlands, then back on the Hume Hwy and into Sydney.
