A Dae in the Pentland Hills
Rob Howard / 29.08.2007
The final Wan Dae Adventure Race of 2007 will be taking place on 8th September in the Pentland Hills just south of Edinburgh, and it’s an ideal chance for racers in Scotland and Northern England to compete in this superb area. (Anyone who has competed in an Edinburgh Rat Race will have seen a little of the Pentlands already, and this is a chance to see much more.)The series is aimed at beginner to intermediate racers and also those more experienced racers looking for a good days racing. The Wan Dae’s are light-hearted and include a fair amount of tongue in cheek as well as some serious racing involving mountain biking, running, kayaking and navigation.
In amongst all this are various activity checkpoints which to test mind, body or teamwork skills. Racers can choose between the 5 hour Simply Blended Class and the tougher 8 hour Cask Strength Class, with the option to enter as a team of two, three or four people, of any combination of males and females. There really is no excuse for not being able to get a team together!
The races are a score style format, which involves collecting as many checkpoints worth different values in the time available. It's up to teams to choose their own route and strategy for the day to come back with as high a score as possible. Teams can choose how long to spend between running, biking and completing the optional activities, including kayaking, so it's up to you to come up with the strategy that suits your abilities!
All kayaking equipment is provided and the other gear required is minimal. Details are on the race website www.scottishadventureracing.com and entries are being taken online until 6th September and thereafter on the day.
The race is planned and directed by local racer John Laughlin, who completed the Edinburgh Rat Race with the British Champions Aberdeen Asset Management. This is the sixth Wan Dae event and the second time it has been to the Pentland Hills, which are only a stone's throw from the Edinburgh City Bypass.
Anyone struggling to find a team mate can contact the organisers or put a post on our Scottish Series forum.
