24Seven in The Forest of Dean

Rob Howard / 21.05.2008
CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, has announced an innovative 24 hour adventure race as a fund raiser. Former GB tennis player Annabel Croft recently launched the 24Seven event in Hyde Park and the event website is up and running, and accepting entries.

24Seven will take place in The Forest of Dean over the weekend of October 11/12th and is open to individuals and teams of 3, at a cost of £75 and £225, with all participants asked to raise a minimum of £300 for CLIC Sargent.

Those who raise more money will also get some help or bonus points during the event itself, where participants have 24 hours to complete 7 challenges. These are promised to test their mental dexterity as well as physical fitness, and the organisers say that “ every challenge will allow those with more limited skill and fitness backgrounds to take part,” adding, “mental dexterity, careful planning and smart thinking will count for just as much as how fit you are!”

A few details of the 7 challenges have already been released but the full details will only be given to competitors on the start line.

“Adventure Prologue”
In a Le Mans style start, you will cover 8 miles by foot, bike and canoe to kick start your 24 hour challenge. This is just the beginning …

“Piecing it Together”
Pit your mental dexterity against the other challengers by solving this complex puzzle…

“Journey of Discovery”
Against the clock, you will have to complete a 10 mile distance on foot, keeping your eyes pealed for the vital items you need to collect for your next challenge ahead

“Tower of Strength”
Construct your own tower of strength using a particular style of ‘brick’.

“Total Recall”
Travel 6 miles on mountain bike to a number of marked locations before a test of your memory skills.

“Water Torture”
Navigate 2.6 miles on foot to a marked location to collect a specific item, returning over varied terrain to the start. This will involve water, skill and a lot of patience!

“Charity Challenge”
Raise a minimum £300 to take part in 24seven. Each and every penny raised contributes to your ultimate goal – to raise funds for children with cancer. However, the more you raise, the more it will help towards your overall success, with rewards and benefits being earned along the way!

Participants won’t necessarily be racing for the whole 24 hours and food, refreshments and camping accommodation (if required) are included in the entry fee, but the planners do say “the clock will always be ticking!”

Anyone interested in taking part can find out more on the website at www.24sevenchallenge.co.uk.
