Mars Challenge - the classic multisport race
Rosi / 12.04.2004
The usual suspects are expected to line up at the start in Ballarat, with bets being placed on whether the reigning champions of John Jacoby (open men), Karen Hopkinson (open women) and Sloan (veteran men) can finally be de-throned.Jarod Kohler - who came closer than anyone previously to upsetting Jacoby missing out by just 2 seconds - will surely be hungrier than ever for the win. The $1000 cash prize on offer for the first male and female across the line wouldn\'t hurt either.
There is expected to be a record number of female participants this year, and a new category for veteran female has been added, along with juniors being able to compete for the first time.
Race director Phil Waters says \"it\'s a tough course . . .it will test your paddling ability\" The weather can make a big difference; with 32km on the water, a strong wind or adverse tide can make life tough for competitors. All the same they keep on coming back, \"I don\'t know where they all come from, to be honest\" says Waters.
The course was originally designed with paddlers in mind, so has probably slowed up the triathletes a little. Simon Knowles - a well known local triathlete is reportedly ready to give it a nudge, Kris Clausen will just be back from a season of racing in New Zealand and if Guy Andrews makes the trek from sunny Queensland (and indications are that he will)it will be a good mix of paddlers, adventure racers, multisport athletes and ironmen toughing it out for the mens title.
Despite the possibility of all the \'names\' showing up, Waters says it really is a race for the weekend warriors. Most people get hooked and want to better their time from last year, but \"ninety percent of competitors are there primarily to have a great day\".
Waters believes there is room for more races such as this on the calendar it just needs \"someone to step up and take on the project\" he says. The insurance issue is just another challenge to overcome, its not a reason to not run a race.
With over 300 people expected on the start line, that\'s at lest 270 planning on having a great day. Look out for their smiles as they cross the finish line at Barwon Heads after 20km running, 79km cycling, and 32km paddling!
