New Race The Rockies 18 Hour Challenge

Rob/RTR Press Release / 28.04.2004
Building on the success of their rapidly sold -out event in Kananaskis Country, Race the Rockies Ltd. announced a second 18 Hour Adventure Challenge in Golden, B.C. and online registration for this new race is already open.

“This is a jaw-dropping course with serious alpine thrills,” said Race Director Adele Frizzell. “The Golden race is more technically challenging and remote than our Kananaskis race.” The mountain town of Golden, BC is squeezed between three magnificent mountain ranges - the Rockies, Selkirks and the Purcells.

“It is a perfect venue for an adventure race,” she added, and she should know as over the last two years Frizzell and her partner have spent several months scouting out the backcountry wilderness of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory for this purpose. “We want to create adventure races in beautiful places. Golden definitely stands out.”

Frizzell first met with representatives from Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and the Town of Golden’s Economic Development Authority to discuss the idea of an 18 hour race series in the Golden area. They liked the concept of a short adventure race that would run annually and agreed to support it. However, Gord Vizzutti from Kicking Horse suggested Race the Rockies hold ten spots for local athletes.

“We liked the idea of giving something back to the community, as we hope to draw volunteers and local support for this event year after year. Gord’s idea made a lot of sense.”

Race the Rockies - Golden is scheduled for July 24/25 2004 and the race will be capped at 100 participants. Athletes will navigate, bike, hike and paddle a 95 km unmarked course that is expected to take approximately 18 hours to complete. Registration is open to solo athletes and teams of three and you can find out more here.
