The Wan Day is an adventure race that caters for all abilities. Offering 5 or 8 hours of multi-sport and adventure activity, participants run, bike, kayak and attempt special challenges, navigating their way around the course in the stunning Pentland Hills.

The "Wan Day" established itself as a firm favourite on the Scottish adventuring scene from the beginning and the Pentlands venue has been the stand out selection every year it has run.

Established by Detail Events in early 2006, planned and directed by John Laughlin over the last three years and partnered with excellent co-operation from the Pentland Regional Park, this cheerful event has always packed a real punch on action, value and scenery. Now, in 2009, John is off to pastures new and Gary Tompsett (Detail's haggard old hack) and Stewart Caithness (new youthful blood and long time Rat Race aficionado) are taking up the organisation of this classic day out.

The Venue

The Pentlands has a very special reputation as a tough but accessible range of hills close to Edinburgh and it is country the organisers know well. When you are on the northernmost hills, it feels like you could reach out and touch Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle and the backdrop to those mighty hills is the City and the Firth of the Forth - that's a vast view.

Inland, the Pentlands look out over everything else, and are connected by excellent running terrain and truly excellent biking trails. After some time on the rough stuff, imagine a quick splash in sit-on-top kayaks in one of the lochs, throw in a few morale boosting and perhaps taxing challenges and then you have a complete and honest day (or half day) of hard work. That's the Wan Day adventure.

For 2009, the event base is shifting a little further north than usual, as the 3-times-used assembly and kayaking venue of Harlaw is undergoing some flood prevention work. This enables the event to focus on a very different assembly area and a very different kayaking experience, even nearer to the City.

Gary Tompsett comments: "Be prepared for a steep, intricate and thoroughly entertaining work-out. If you think you know the Pentlands, think again. There's more nooks and crannies than you can shake a stick at and if they are on a map or if you can 'follow the tape' then you're going in there!"
