Questars stage first 2002 race
Rob / 14.03.2002
Quest held the first of 8 races scheduled for 2002 in Wiltshire on February 24th, starting from the village of Wootton Rivers. It’s on the Kennet and Avon canal, near the Marlborough Downs and close to the Savarnake Forest, making it an ideal spot for a one-day race.
Starting the season in February was always a bit risky but the race was full with 70 entries and despite cold and wet weather, and lots of mud, everyone was happy to be out competing again. There were a mix of competitors new to AR and experienced racers, but it was a tough race for everyone in the conditions, especially on the 3 hour bike stage.
Not surprisingly the established teams came out on top, with Hi-Five/Wadenhoe winning the team class and Paul McCarty and Grant Lemke winning the pairs. Both teams had members whose last race was the Eco-Challenge in New Zealand. However, it was the veterans pairing of Robert Robinson and Alistair Sutherland who won overall.
With a free place in the British Championship Final going to the team leading the Quest Series after the first 6 races Wadenhoe/Hi-Five have made a good start. The next Quest race on April 13/14th in East Devon is their only 2-day race and the first British Championship qualifying race.
