Team T.O.A.B. wins inaugural Angry Seagull: Dusk til Dawn Adventure Race!
Press Release / 07.07.2010
On May 29th, eight teams of adventure racers ran and canoed into the fading light of dusk on the west side of the Bruce Peninsula. Bright and early the next morning, Team T.O.A.B. (Kalon Sparks, Doug Barton, Todd Baron) crossed the finish line on the west-facing beach of Cape Croker Indian Park. After nine hours and forty-five minutes of canoeing, biking and trekking through the dark, the members of Team T.O.A.B. claimed victory in the first ever Angry Seagull: Dusk til Dawn Adventure Race. The race started at 9:00pm with a short one kilometre run to the canoe put-in on Isaac Lake. Teams paddled their way across Isaac Lake and a short distance upriver to CP2 before navigating their way back south through a maze of reeds and swamp to the first transition area. Teams arriving at TA-1 before 10:40pm had the option to complete an extra, advanced canoe CP – those teams completing the advanced CP AND completing the race within the 12-hour time limit would be ranked ahead of teams who did not complete the advanced CP. However, teams that gambled in completing the advanced CP but who ended up missing the 12-hour cut-off time would not end get credit for the advanced CP.
Four teams – T.O.A.B., Enigma, Lost Boyz and Liquid Mountaineering – arrived at TA-1 within a minute of each other and proceeded to the advanced CP. Team Longevity/Wii Not Fit arrived shortly after but decided not to attempt the advanced CP and headed quickly into the bike section. The biggest gamble was made by Team Just In It To Finish. Arriving at TA-1 just four minutes ahead of the advanced cut-off time, Just In It To Finish took the early risk of spending the extra time to complete the advanced CP.
By midnight, all eight teams were on the bike course, following road and a wet and muddy ATV trail to CP-4 and CP-5, before arriving at CP-6 at the Bruce County Mountain Bike Adventure Park. CP-7, CP-8, and CP-9 were on the single-track trails of the Adventure Park. On the way to the Mountain Bike Adventure Park, Team Just In It To Finish, who had gambled on the advanced canoe CP, found that they had underestimated the ATV trail leading to the park. After some difficulties locating CP-5 on the trail, they arrived after the cut-off time and were forced to complete a shorter mountain bike section.
