A New Race with a History in Papua New Guinea
Press Release / 13.07.2010
Considered one of the most rugged and bio diverse mountain ranges on the planet, the Owen Stanley Ranges in Papua New Guinea seemed the perfect location for an adventure race. A real adventure!Add to this a remarkable war history, where heroics and bravery and sheer guts and determination saw an out-manned and out-equipped army overcome a seemingly unstoppable force, and you have the Kokoda Track.
Focusing on these two aspects (physical challenge and historical respect), the Ultimate Kokoda Adventure Race held between the 5th and 12th March, 2011, will be an absolutely awesome event that will pit athletes from all over the world against the iconic Kokoda Track, each other and the clock.
The Ultimate Kokoda Adventure Race (UKAR), is labeled as a Premium Adventure Race The event will consist of 30 teams of two (in 2 different categories) competing against each other in a staged event over 4 days / 3 nights. Competitors will be timed between stages where they will have to negotiate the jungles, rivers, mud and mountains of the infamous Kokoda Track. But this will not be as simple as just getting from point A to point B.
Each team will be taken off the main Track to various places of historical significance, with only a map and a compass to lead the way (that's right, no local support between stages). Teams will not only cross rivers but paddle down them in their own hand made craft but will also undertake local track challenges that will immerse them in the culture of the indigenous people along the Track.
