Racer dies in Argentina
Rob / 14.03.2002
The sad news that Uruguayan racer Tatiana Goldoni of Team Dark Dog died suddenly near of the end of a race in Argentina has shocked the racing community.
Translation problems made early reports difficult to understand, and some jumped to the incorrect conclusion that an accident of some kind had happened. However, it now appears Tatiana collapsed about an hour short of the finish of the Desafio de los Volcanes race.
She was at the final PC and died of sudden heart failure, despite quickly getting medical attention. (Her team mates, Reuben Mandure and Nestor Parra are paramedics.) An autopsy later confirmed heart failure, with the doctor adding she could as easily have collapsed and died at home. Her death was not attributable to taking part in the race.
A popular 25 year old Tatiana was described by Roxana Espoz, who met her at Eco-Challenge, as “a wonderful, funny and charming young woman†and by another friend as “a bright, tough and experienced competitorâ€. She had taken part in many races in South America as well as the last 3 Eco-Challenges and competed in orienteering, kayaking, and swimming, as well as climbing extensively.
Her death is a particular shock, not just because it is the first death in an adventure race, but as she appeared fit and well and was a physical fitness instructor. Everyone at SleepMonsters.com would like to express their condolences to her family, friends and team mates.
