The Stinger MTB Duathlon returns to Plymouth

Press Release / 30.12.2010
In these austere times, race organisers strive to raise a smile among the masses. And let's face it; there is nothing as funny as seeing runners on mountain bikes or mountain bikers running in cycle helmets.

The setting is Newnham Park, a legendary venue that has echoed to the sound of screaming riders since the birth of U.K. mountain biking. Competitors can expect a 5km off road run – maybe with a cheeky river crossing but definitely a hilly test.

Survivors then move on to the mountain bike. Four 5 km laps with the emphasis on the whole route being non-threatening to the beginners but a challenge for the experienced to ride at speed. This is where the mountain bikers can start to claw back the deficit and attempt to overtake the 70 year old in Ron Hill Tracksters that blew them away on the run stage.
With the lame and weary cast aside, the remaining athletes change footwear again and head off into The Stinger. A mere 3km but depending on the mood of the organisers it can be the muddiest, wettest, hilliest, leg-ripper since the end of the battle for Middle Earth.

Mementoes for all competitors, prizes for category winners provided by Certini Bicycle Company and a short queue for the bacon sandwiches at the end will ensure a quality day out in the heart of Devon.

Previous winner Jay Horton of Team Certini-McCaulays' considers the race to be an ideal kick off to the season. "The Stinger is a really great leveller. It brings together all the local whippet runners, the shaven legged road brigade, the baggy wearing mountain bikers and all the have-a-go heroes. Everyone has their strengths and it really is anyone's game. I was second for most of the race last time until the leader pulled up injured in the last kilometre. In the spirit of sportsmanship, I blew past him and took all the glory and the prizes."
