Mobile power device: Brunton SolarRoll

Press Release / 08.02.2011
Artful Technology

Brunton's SolarRoll is one of the most famous solar panels in the world: it was even exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Originally the SolarRolls were designed for expeditions and to produce energy on all kind of outdoor trips – not just for a great look and feel. Yet, it is the combination of technology, construction and design of these portable solar power plants that bridges the gap between fascinating art and eco-friendly future technology, the gap between culture and nature.

When US-brand Brunton developed the SolarRoll series, no Brunton engineer had the Museum of Modern Art in mind. The focus was on powering electronic equipment deep in the wilderness with a panel that is characterized by good efficiency, longevity and mechanical flexibility. Brunton met these demands with a mix of amorphous silicon for the solar cells and a Tefzel® fluorpolymer construction that is very lighttransmissive.

Amorphous silicon enables a design of very flexible solar panels for recharging satellite phones, video or digital cameras on the go. The solar cells of the SolarRoll panels are covered by a lamination making them 100% waterproof. Just the branch connection has to be sealed separately, when using the panels on the water.

The clou from an energetic point of view, though, is in the remarkable performance: even in heavily overcast weather or in dawn, the SolarRolls still provide enough electricity for powering up most of the devices e.g. expeditions require. With this figure in mind SolarRolls can be used wherever reliable power supply is necessary during the whole day.
