Soldier Challenge In The Capital
News Release / 28.03.2011
1,000 people descended on the capital on Saturday to take part in the first ever Soldier Challenge, a new fundraising urban adventure race from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity – the charity that supports soldiers for life. The sell out event saw competing teams infiltrate various London landmarks and experience them in brand new ways as they completed as many of the 35 military themed checkpoints and challenges as they could in the designated four hours.
This unique mission included abseiling The Oval Cricket Ground; pulling Land Rovers at Regent’s Park Barracks, navigating a 3D maze onboard HMS Belfast, cycling and paint balling at Waterloo Station, tackling an inflatable assault course in the moat at the Tower of London and even face painting at Gordon Square.
HRH Prince Harry launched the registration for the Soldier Challenge back in November and today the sell-out event again enjoyed high profile support. Prime Minister David Cameron recorded a special video message of support that the participants watched before setting off. The Prime Minister congratulated competitors before adding:
“Let’s remember what this is all about – this is not just a great day out, it’s a chance to say thank you to our brave armed forces and of course, to raise money for the fantastic work done by ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.â€
Celebrities were also up for the challenge as Model and fitness fan Nell McAndrew and TV presenter Dan Snow, leant support to participants and took on the Capital’s first ever urban adventure race.
James Vosper-Robinson, vice chairman, Youth Committee of The Soldiers’ Charity, commented: “We are overwhelmed at the level of support The Soldiers’ Charity has received for the first Soldier Challenge and 1,000 competitors have had fantastic fun trying everything from kayaking to even painting their faces with cammo paint! It has been a great demonstration of some of the mental and physical challenges that our servicemen and women face every day and at the same time raise some much-needed funds for the Charity. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in today.â€
The first ever Soldier Challenge was organised by Rat Race Adventures, the team behind The Rat Race Urban Adventure, Scotland Coast to Coast and the Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest.
Every penny fundraised by the participants of Soldier Challenge goes straight to The Soldiers’ Charity; providing a lifetime of support to soldiers and their dependents, and delivers grants to a whole range of other service charities.
