Dakota Rogaining Championships in August

10.08.2011
What is a Rogaine? A long-distance cross-country navigation race for teams of two to five traveling by map and compass only, trying to bag orienteering flags and accumulate points . Course designer and organizer Rick Emerson (PQ Badlands 2009) has 40K+ acres of varied terrain from pinnacles to prairie and from canyons to mountains for you to explore. This OUSA-sanctioned event hosted by the Black Hills Orienteering Club includes the 24-hour championship, a 12-in-24 hour intermediate race, and a 4-hour short course.

Primal Quest shared western South Dakota and the Black Hills have world class terrain for orienteering. Custer State Park is unique in that one area can provide such a diversity of these challenges. With nearly 50 controls, Rick challenges you try and clean the course and guarantees you won’t be bored. Navigating with the wildlife alone is a thrill – especially at night. Nothing like coming upon a big bull buffalo or having a buck antelope follow you along your travels. Throw in some elk, deer, and a mountain lion or two – it’s all included.

Much like an adventure race with “only” the foot portions, the Dakota Rogaining Championships provide a challenging physical test, but also include goodie bags, sponsor swag, and an awards dinner. Bring your camera, some sturdy trail shoes and gaiters, and be prepared for an awesome experience. Check out www.peakassurance.net for event details
