Seagate Take Balance Bar 24 Hour Title

06.12.2004
It was a familiar scenario, Team Seagate took an early lead and never looked back. The New Zealand team took first place honours in Los Angeles, the BALANCE BAR 24-Hour series crown, and a total of $25,500 in prize money.

“Winning the Series was on our list of things to do this year,” said Seagate’s Kristina Anglem. “It was exciting to come into the race tied with Nike ACG/Balance Bar. It was a hard won title and there was always a chance they would come through ahead of us.”

Seagate consisted of Anglem, Nathan Fa’avae and Richard Usher, while Team Nike ACG/Balance Bar raced with Danelle Ballengee, Mike Kloser and Michael Tobin. Team Montrail, who took home third place in both the race and the Series, was made up of Rebecca Rusch, Novak Thompson and Matthew Weatherly-White.

The course was approximately 90-miles and included mountain biking, kayaking, trekking, ropes and land navigation. Teams began with a mountain biking section that left Brandeis-Bardin Institute in Simi Valley at the early hour of 3:30 am and took them through Cheseboro Canyon before arriving at Dan Blocker Beach 30 miles later.

From there, they jumped into their kayaks for a 14-mile paddle north toward Malibu’s Leo Carrillo Beach. From the kayak take-out it was 5 miles on foot to the transition area at Nicolas Flats, then came a 13-mile mountain bike ride to bring the teams to Malibu Creek State Park and second trek.

While on foot, teams came to a 125-foot long Tyrolean, some 80 feet above the rock pools, which was followed by another 18 miles on foot, heading to the final transition area. From the Lower Dead Horse Parking Lot teams took to their mountain bikes for the final 15-mile ride down the Backbone Trail, heading to the finish line at Santa Monica beach.
