The Wilderness ARC - The Best of British
Rob Howard / 10.01.2005
With the launch of the Wilderness ARC website, more details of the UK’s first World Series event are now available, and it’s a race that promises to deliver the ‘Best of British’.The race is unique collaboration of the most experienced British race organisers, it’s to be staged in the most challenging Scottish terrain, and will be the British Championship as well as the final World Series qualifier for the 2005 World Finals.
It’s a 5 day expedition style race taking place between August 22-26th, and the venue will be Lochaber, ‘The Outdoor Capital of Scotland’. The setting is described as “the most elemental setting ever provided for a European adventure race. A combination of stunning topography and the vagaries of Scottish \'summer\' weather!â€
Lochaber, on Scotland’s exposed West coast is home to the UK’s highest mountain - Ben Nevis, the dramatic rock ramparts and bloody history of Glen Coe, the wild peninsula of Knoydart, exposed to Atlantic gales and easier to access by boat than on foot or bike, and the westernmost point of mainland Europe - Ardnamurchan Point. The region has hosted the Mountain biking World Cup for the past 2 years, and is easily accessible from international airports at Glasgow, Prestwick, Edinburgh or Inverness.
The team who plan to make the most of this spectacular setting have between them organised and planned the courses for the UK’s most successful and innovative races in recent years. The race organiser, Phil Humphreys, runs ACE Races, the UK’s most successful and longest established race series, and has a reputation for detailed and slick organisation.
