The Verdon Canyon Challenge celebrates its’ 20th birthday

News Release / 19.03.2012

The 20th edition of the Verdon Canyon Challenge (formerly the Columbia Verdon Canyon Challenge) will take place on the 23rd and 24th of June, 2012. This race, technically challenging and true to the original spirit of trail running, was created in 1993 by Mr. Jean Giacosa as a reflection of his love of the outdoors and the values of outdoor sports.

Since its inception the format has changed; starting as a stage race it evolved towards its current format of a non-stop race in order to respond to the wishes of the racers. However, the setting has remained unchanged; the stunning region of the Gorges du Verdon, the largest canyon in Europe with its breathtaking turquoise blue water and rocky terrains.

The 20th edition in 2012 is composed of the distances; 100km (6,530m ascent) for the fittest athletes, 50km (3,125m ascent), and 30km (1,697m ascent).

The 100km race will begin in the village of Aiguines, the 50km in Moustiers Ste Marie and the 30km in Les Salles sur Verdon.

Racers would be sadly mistaken if they think that, as the race takes place in the Provence region of France, it will be a walk in the park. The race route is rocky and requires constant concentration, and it is in this context that solidarity amongst the trailers takes on its full meaning. Pascal Blanc, winner of the 100km in 2011 said,

“What an opportunity to be able to race on this magnificent route, if the reputation of the canyons is firmly established, the Verdon Canyon Challenge also allows racers to discover the Verdon region in all its diversity.

In an ambience that remains friendly and laid-back, where, each person coming to test themselves against this extremely technical terrain, wonder is ever present. The blue water winding through the immense limestone walls is sheer magic. Forests provide a diversity and range of shapes and colors that harmonize into a unique visual identity.

And the landscapes, ah the landscapes, the lakes, the plateau of Valensole, the canyons, the forests of boxwood, trails on the ridges overlooking the gorge, what a treat! But beware, the race is demanding, and sometimes it is worth the time to stop and take in the beauty of Mother Nature, because it is indeed a technical and uncompromising terrain. I can’t wait for the 20th edition of this legendary race!”
