Ukatak Cancelled

Susan McKenzie / 13.01.2005
After four years in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, Ukatak was ready to move further south. The race, which attracted teams from Canada, the United States and Europe, was scheduled to go from the Gatineau region of Quebec (across the border from Ottawa) to Mont Tremblant, one of Canada\'s best-known ski resorts.

But, like many adventure races here in Canada and around the world, budget problems got in the way of a successful event.

\"We are saddened by this turn of events,\" writes race director Nathalie Pelland on the Ukatak website. \"But, given our current financial situation, we cannot take the risk of holding this event. Rest assured that Ukatak will return in 2006.\"

In the meantime, the Ukatak-deprived can still participate in the inaugural Urban Ukatak.

This nine-hour urban race will take place on February 6th, 2005 as part of Ottawa’s Winterlude Festival, the Capital’s world-famous winter carnival. It’s part Ukatak-part Amazing Race, and will include physical, intellectual and psychological challenges. According to the website, teamwork, creativity and stamina are major criteria for this race.
