A New Generation of Adventure Racers in Quebec

Endurance Adventure / 28.09.2012

The 2012 edition of the Saint-Donat Endurance Aventure Raid welcomed a new population of raiders. Adventure racing is developing in Quebec and offering new challenges to outdoor enthusiasts.

More than 120 racers were present at the start of the two events presented on Saturday while another 200 participants between the ages of 10 and 14 years old were present the previous day for the school race.

Running and pedaling over muddy trails, swimming across a marsh, rappelling down a cliff, going through a cave, walking a slackline, and overcoming obstacles are all challenges which appeal to this new generation of racers who are hungry for adventure!

Team spirit, preparation, the unknown, and surprises along the course ... adventure racing provides its share of challenges.

Parents, children, young and old, athletes and non athletes, sporty and less sporty participants all have one thing in common: their desire to have fun!

Many participants have been followers for many years. Some began racing with their parents and have become excellent adventure racers. New athletes are on their way up and it is encouraging to see young people show an interest in the sport. This year, many parent-child teams participated in our various events. Our youngest Fou Raid participant, who is only 11 years old, won Saturday’s race with his father.

The winners of this edition were a mixed team from the Eastern Townships while the second place went to a male team from Quebec.

Adventure racing is attracting more and more endurance athletes while offering interesting challenges to couples, parent-child duos, as well as brothers and sisters. Beyond the physical performance, events represent wonderful human adventures which set the stage for surpassing oneself, encouraging others, and having fun!

The future looks promising since young people are adopting the sport!
