Germany's Highest Mountain Causes Trailrunning Fever

News Release / 05.12.2012

Grainau, December 5, 2012 - Trailrunners from all around the world will gather for the third time from June 21-23, 2013 in Grainau at the feet of Zugspitze to circle Germany's highest mountain. The registration for the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL has been open since 72 hours and 260 starting positions have been already given to participants from 19 different nations.

No less than 100 kilometers and 5,420 meters difference in altitude must be mastered in one run in the ultimate discipline, the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL. But also the bit shorter SUPERTRAIL from Leutasch to Grainau is quite challenging by demanding quite a lot from the runners with its 68,8 kilometers and 3,120 meters difference in altitude. A bit more relaxing is the new BASETRAIL that celebrates its premiere in Mittenwald next year. Although about 35,6 kilometers and 1,892 meters difference in altitude must be covered till the finishing line, it offers the ideal opportunity to make the first running experience or even step it up.

A concept that is well accepted in the trailrunning scene and attracts more participants on the Zugspitze from year to year. In Mittenwald too, the excitement about the positive development of the event is big. "Mittenwald was an important stopover for the participants of the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAILS in the past years too. We're even more excited that we are now a starting town as well. Our region is ideally suitable for running sports events and has quite a lot to offer for trailrunners", Sabrina Blandau, acting tourism director of Mittenwald, said.

Basically everyone can take part in the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL. The facts of the routes speak for themselves anyway. Experience in high alpine terrain as well as good coordinating skills are, beyond that, indispensable and require a solid preparation. This year too, the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL is again an official qualification run for the "Utra Trail du Mont Blanc". There are three points for finishers of the Ultra distance and who ever crosses the finishing line at the Supertrail gets two pints.
