An Invite to the Appalachians

Rob Howard / 09.02.2005
With qualification places hard to come by for November’s World Championship race in New Zealand, a trip to Maine for the 5th Appalachian Extreme could be the answer. It’s the only N. American race teams can qualify from ... and is a great race to enter anyway!

Race Directors Norm Greenberg & Tracyn Thayer of Racing Ahead Inc. have more experience of expedition racing than most, and are looking forward to welcoming fellow racers from around the world.

If you’re not familiar with the race, their Appalachian Extreme Q&A will tell you more.

When: 20-24 May 2005

Where: Hosted by Snow Cap Inn and Sunday River Ski Resort, Newry, Maine

Why #1: You could win a FREE entry ($6000-7000 US$ value) to the 2005 World Champs on the West Coast of New Zealand, or, doing the AE can at least help you qualify.

Why #2/Who: With 7 years directing events, as well as 7 seasons of racing experience in the world\'s major Expedition Events, including Eco-Challenge, Southern Traverse, Raid Gauloises, Primal Quest, Elf Authentic Adventure, etc, Racing Ahead, Inc. has designed an event with the roots of Adventure Racing in mind - challenging navigation, authentic adventure, and demanding terrain, all at a competitive price.

What: 200 miles of canoeing (flatwater & whitewater up to class II+), mountain biking, hiking/Running (some really great bushwhacking in moose country), rappelling (approx 200 feet), and navigating with only map & compass.

How: Co-ed Teams of 4 (the only qualifying team composition) - $2400 , OPEN 3-person - $1980, OPEN 2-person - $1390. Entry fee includes canoes, radios, t-shirt/other race memorabilia, closing party (Maine\'s Shipyard brewing supplies the party\'s keg!), and more.
