Challenge Seekers to Ride, Run and Paddle Marysville to Melbourne
News Release / 05.02.2013
The Marysville 2 Melbourne Multisport Challenge returns for it’s third edition, covering a distance of 155 kilometres from the country to the city as competitors run, ride and paddle the epic journey on Sunday 28 April, 2013.
The multi discipline event combines the sports of trail running, road cycling and flat water river kayaking into one marathon race challenging amateurs and elites in equal measure.
Event organisers Rapid Ascent are expecting to attract more than 1,000 challenge seekers in both the teams and individual categories, following two successful events in 2011 and 2012.
“The Marysville to Melbourne race is a grand journey that pushes entrants to their physical limits over the course of a full day’s racing,” said Sam Maffett, Rapid Ascent General Manager.
“The course is challenging, but the beauty of the landscapes more than makes up for the sweat and tears,” continued Maffett.
Beginning in the township of Marysville, the course takes you from the wilds of Victoria's regional mountain heartland, and races its way into the vibrant heart of Melbourne's metropolis to finish 155 kilometres later on the banks of the Yarra River at Docklands – without passing through a single set of traffic lights!
Maffett notes that while a solo hit-out is a big undertaking, those of lesser athleticism can still enjoy the race by choosing to do only one or more legs as part of a relay team.
Returning for their third attempt is the team named ‘Tuesday Night Parma’s’ with members Meaghan, Ryan, Kate and Adam focussed on having fun and enjoying the adventurous journey.
“We love Marysville to Melbourne! It’s an adventurous and beautiful event that involves an epic journey that continues to motivate us each year,” said team captain Meaghan.
“For us, it’s as much about the logistics and support crew, as it is the competitors. We all work out where we can drink coffee and eat bacon and egg sandwiches, and still make it to the transitions in time.
“It’s a great day; very social and a fantastic opportunity to get out and be active whilst feeling a sense of achievement at the end of it,” said Meaghan.
The Difference returns as the events’ official charity partner, with Rapid Ascent to donate ten dollars of each entry fee to the organisation.
Carrying out work in support of the disadvantaged communities, The Difference undertakes measures to prevent child abuse and neglect, suicide, rates of reimprisonment, homelessness, public housing waiting lists and credit default, funding some superb programs to help right the wrong.
“The Marysville to Melbourne is a great partner for us. It promotes a physically active approach to life and the principle that by participating, you succeed. Just like the indicators The Difference measures, to what extent you succeed is up to you and the goals you set,” said Founder and Chairman, Nic Bolto.
The Marysville to Melbourne 155km Multisport Challenge includes:
· 19km Dom Dom trail run
· 50km Black Spur road ride
· 41km St Andrews road ride
· 14km Yarra trail run
· 15km Fitness Paddlers Australia river paddle
· 16km Yarra’s Edge river paddle
The course is open to all levels of athletic ability and may be completed as an individual doing all legs or as a relay team of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 people.
