OMM Race Series
News Release / 16.04.2013
The OMM Race Series is expanding this year with a reworking of the Polaris Challenge format for mountain bikers and a new OMM Lite event for runners which will be an ideal training or starter race for those aiming to race the OMM later in the year. Details on the news races are below.
OMM Bike
A mountain marathon format, but easier on the knees. Competitors compete either as solo or in a team of 2 over two days. Based on the Polaris Challenge competitors have the option to ride with camping equipment and stay at a remote site overnight or travel light and return to HQ before the second day of riding.
Courses
Polaris Challenge -7 hour day 1, 5 hour day 2 (Wild Camp)
Long Score - 7 hour day 1, 5 hour day 2
Short Score - 5 hour day 1, 4 hour day 2
The Polaris Challenge was conceived in 1987 to bring Mountain Marathons to the Mountain Biking community. Now in its’ third year as part of the OMM Race Series, we are offering a long score event that returns to the HQ based on demand at the 2012 event as well as the traditional long score with wild overnight camp and a short score category.
OMM Lite
OMM’s starter race and season warm up the experienced. In teams of 2, The OMM Lite is a two day event with courses offering between 9 and 12 hrs total running in the British summertime. Orienteering between your chosen checkpoints to make the day as tough as you like, some competitors will run continuously to win their class while others will take a more leisurely approach and concentrate on their navigation. You can choose to carry camping equipment and wild camp or, if you don’t yet have lightweight camping kit, return for a more comfortable night camping at the HQ.
Courses
Classic Long Score – 7 hour day 1, 5 hour day 2 (Wild Camp)
Long Score – 7 hour day 1, 5 hour day 2
Short Score – 5 hour day 1, 4 hour day 2
Teams will receive their course maps on the start line and conduct their route planning, depending on how hard they choose to push themselves and then take in as many checkpoints as possible within their allocated time limit, returning to HQ, or the wild camp for some well earned relaxation before competing again on the Sunday. On return to the HQ on Sunday there will be a hot meal and a drink waiting before prize giving and home time. There is food available on site as well as a bar and physio services. We have lowered the age limits for this event and competitors from the age of 12 may compete provided that they do so with a parent or legal guardian who has previous hill walking experience.
