Lakeland Ten Tops Tri

John Mcavoy / 27.11.2013

The Lakeland Ten Tops 24 hour triathlon challenge is possibly the purest, hardest and most scenic triathlon available in England. It is an individual, self -supported, non-commercial challenge.

It was devised and first completed by John Mcavoy in summer 2013, involving a 2 mile out and back swim across the widest part of Derwent water in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. You then face a 101 mile bike ride over the six high passes of the Lake District, including the awesome Hardknott with its 30% incline! Fortunately the other passes are never more than 25%.

Finally you will run, walk and stagger 45 miles round the four highest mountains in England, i.e Scafell, Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. The ten official tops and the numerous lumpy bits in-between will give you a total ascent of over 20,000ft [6,100 metres] in 24 hours. It is just you pitted against the elements and the stunning but unforgiving terrain. It is personal, between you and the clock. It is you better trained than ever, pushing yourself to the very edge.  It is you creating a memory you will never forget.

If you dare to dream you can do this, check out the website, but be warned ... It may take over your life for a while. This is not just a challenge of your fitness, you need to get your act together in planning, reconnoitring and mobilising a support team.  Hopefully the guidance on the website will help but ultimately for this challenge you need to be a "do-er" not just a dreamer. It clearly helps to have some crazy friends too.

As soon as someone else does it I can start a "Roll of honour" and "Record times" page on the website.

Give it a go  - you know you want to.
