Marmot Sponsor Adventure Runner Eric Orton

Press Release / 19.08.2014

After decades of sponsoring athletes and expeditions in the climbing, mountaineering and backcountry skiing space, Marmot has recruited Eric Orton as the company’s first-ever Adventure Running Athlete. Eric, who is based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a performance guru and innovative running coach, world-renowned for training a wide spectrum of athletes.

Eric uses his passions for adventure, participation, and health to explore the unlimited possibilities of the body and mind. He has personally overseen the training of fifty and hundred mile champions in running and mountain biking; age-group winners and podium finishers from 5k-50k distances; and serious athletes in the Boston Marathon, Hawaii Ironman, and ski mountaineering championship qualifiers—just to name a few.

“I am excited to be teaming up with Marmot” explains Eric, who races competitively himself, at virtually every distance from 100 meters to 36-hour ultras. “I look forward to bringing my passion for mountain running and exploring human potential to this collaboration and grateful for Marmot’s authenticity and adventurous spirit,” he adds.

Eric came into international acclaim through the bestseller Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, by Christopher McDougall. Eric helped McDougall train for the 50-mile Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon—and joined him for the ultra-adventure. In 2013, Eric authored his own book, The Cool Impossible, to enable people at any fitness level to become strong, fast, healthy runners who can challenge themselves.

“As running continues to evolve into adventure, this is the perfect opportunity to welcome Eric Orton to the Marmot Athlete Team,” explains Alex Gilbert, Marmot’s Athlete Team Manager. “Eric will be joining elite alpinists Adrian Ballinger and Pete Takeda and top ranked freeride skier Hadley Hammer. All of these athletes rely on Marmot’s Momentum clothing and gear to train for their next adventure and to achieve their best.”

As a motivational runner and speaker, Eric has been featured in BBC World News, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness UK, Men’s Running, New York Times, Entrepreneur Magazine, Born to Run and Runner’s World. Eric’s new book, The Cool Impossible, is the first step toward his top-line global running goal: to have one runner per household—worldwide.
