Killarney to Host ITERA Ireland in August

News Release (Open Adventure) / 29.03.2016

Open Adventure, the UK’s leading endurance sports events company, are proud to announce that they will host the 2016 Adventure Racing World Series Race, the ITERA Ireland in Killarney, Co. Kerry.

From August 16th - 23th, 2016, two hundred of the world’s top endurance racers will descend on the west coast of Ireland for one of the toughest races Ireland has ever played host to. Co-ed teams of four will travel 500km non-stop, day and night, covering much of the scenic west coast of Ireland and the newly developed Wild Atlantic Way.  Racers will kayak, climb, mountain bike and trek their way from start to finish, all the time navigating with map and compass.

Speaking at the launch of the ITERA, race director James Thurlow spoke of his excitement to bring this race to Ireland.  “Ireland is the perfect playground for a World Series Expedition Race, the scenery is amazing and the people are just so welcoming”. Director of the Adventure Racing World Series, Craig Bycroft reiterated Thurlow’s enthusiasm, “once again it’s great to have the ITERA as part of the Adventure Racing World Series, Ireland will be a fitting event within the series”. Of note, winners of the ITERA in Ireland will win an entry and qualify for the Adventure Racing Championships in Australia this autumn.

This race is not for the uninitiated, 36 of the world’s most experienced teams have already signed up to test their metal against what will be one of the most epic, beautiful and wildest races they have ever seen.  The suffering will be temporary; the experiences will last them a lifetime.
