After an extremely successful 4th year of running the K-Way MaxiRace Cape Winelands presented by Banhoek Chilli Oil Company in association with Yenn Health and ON Running, organisers have announced a series of strategic changes to ensure an even fuller experience for everyone taking part.

“Our vision is to create THE best trail running experience for our runners, and in order to do this we have made a few changes,” explains race director, Andri Stander. “Land use issues have been one of our biggest challenges for the race, the changes we are making aim to minimise this issue.”

The biggest announced change is the retirement of the 120km route, with a move to focus on the 75km route as the primary ultra-distance for MaxiRace. “With much of the land we traverse for the race being privately owned or managed, we feel that we have not been able to give our runners the best route experience for the 120km race,” says Stander.

“We felt that we would rather reconsider the 120km at a later stage once we have access to all the land-use areas that would offer our runners a world-class route and not force us to make up mileage with loops and two-way segments. We know that our 75km route is of a world class standard and we aim to ensure it has even more to offer runners in the future!”

Also announced was the introduction of a 30km route to the race mix, this was done to add a bridging race for those who have mastered the 20km mountain route but are not yet ready to run the 45m route. “Trail running is growing at an exponential rate, and we hope that by introducing this new distance we will be able to cater for even more runners,” says Stander. “We also have a few new exciting changes to our shorter routes, so watch this space!

The races, which were previously always held over two days, with the ultra-distances taking place on the Saturday and then the shorter routes on the Sunday, will now be held together on one day with a full prize giving and after party taking place at the race village later on the Saturday afternoon. “We will continue to grow our race village and trail expo, which was started this year, and hope to make it a sought-after event within itself in years to come!”
