Tierra Indomita - Vulcania
Tierra Indomita in Chile is a new Adventure Racing World Series Race for 2024
Press Release / 16.06.2023
The Tierra Indomita Adventure Race, set in the stunning Cordillera de Fuego of the Chilean Andes is a new addition to the Adventure Racing World Series next year!
Prepare your senses for an unparalleled experience in one of the most beautiful and wild landscapes on the planet. The ‘Tierra Indomita - Vulcania Edition’ invites you to explore majestic, crystal-clear rivers and lakes, imposing mountains, and the summit of an impressive volcano! In this expedition race, participants will immerse themselves in ancient araucaria forests and cross steep glaciers.
The race is an unsupported competition, meaning that participants will have to rely on their own equipment and skills while trekking, mountain biking, rope climbing, orienteering, and kayaking!
The new expedition race will take place from March 17th to 22nd, 2024, offering 6 days filled with epic challenges and unforgettable landscapes. The adventure will be based in Pucón, which is set in the Chilean Lake District and is now a renowned international centre for adventure sports.
Pucón has a lakeside setting, numerous rivers perfect for white water paddling and is surrounded by high volcanoes, verdant forests and several National Parks. It would be hard to pick a more perfect location for an expedition race!
The climate is stable so weather conditions are expected to range from 5°C to 20°C, and the course will cover a distance of 400-450 km, with the promise of reaching the summit of at least one volcano! The race is now open for entries with a limit of 30 teams of four and 20 pairs.
The Race Director is Nelson Yañez Cortés, who has been involved in the world of adventure racing for 23 years, first as a competitor, and later as the organizer of the longest running circuit in Chile, the "Columbia Challenge," with over 120 races organized.
In 2017, he made his debut in the ARWS circuit as the course director for the demonstration race Patagonia Raid in Argentina, which he also worked on as a full ARWS Qualifier in 2020.
In January 2022, he organized the original Vulcania AR, which was the first Championship Final of the ARWS South America circuit, and which also took place from Pucón.
One of the competitors at that race was British racer Nick Gracie who has experience of over 50 expedition races around the world and is a former World Champion. After the race he said,“It was one of my best racing experiences. The welcome and the way Nelson Yanez and his family, looked after us, was quite amazing, and it was a stunning and beautiful place to race.
“The highlight was the volcano trek, which was one of my best stages ever. The night navigation was challenging and we got to the summit at dawn, where there was a huge crater with a central glacier. Then we trekked along a long ridge and in the orange sunrise we could see nothing but volcanoes, lakes, glaciers and rivers stretching in all directions. It was really special.”
Using the same location and all of his experience has led Yañez to create the new Tierra Indomita (Vulcania) race. In this new adventure, he will be assisted by the experienced competitor and organizer Daniel Pincu, who will contribute his expertise to help create an extraordinary new expedition race for South America.
The race winners will receive a free entry to the 2024 Adventure Racing World Championship which is in Ecuador in November.
There is also a shorter (150km) Tierra Indomita (Desert edition) in November this year, which is part of the ARWS South America series.
Join us and be part of the history of the Tierra Indomita Adventure Race. We look forward to sharing an unforgettable experience in the breathtaking landscapes of Chile!
