More Details on British Championship Finals

More detailed information has been released on the first ever British Adventure Racing Championship Final which will take place in North Wales between September 27th and October 2nd.

The distance will be between 280 - 320 kilometres (175 - 200 miles) including mountain trekking, some technical mountain biking, swimming with full gear and use of double kayaks, perhaps with a short sea kayak stage. The rope stage will include a Tyrolean Traverse (which bikes will have to be taken across as well) and there will be a mandatory rest stop on the course.

Race Director Brian Elliot is promising something a bit different which incorporates elements of all the qualifying races, and a course which it will be possible for all teams to get round, it won’t just be designed for elite squads.

One important consideration to teams entering is the need to have a support crew (of at least 2) and a vehicle to transport equipment during the race. Not too many UK races work this way (only the Hebridean Challenge and Salomon X-adventure national events have used support crews) so there may not be a ready supply of experienced supporters to help out. However, it is a great chance for racers new to AR who want to see first hand what a multi-day race is all about before they have a go themselves. We’ve put a BARC category in our forum and anyone who’d like to volunteer as a supporter can do so there.

All the detailed information on mandatory kit, an FAQ, the necessary skills and the full rules and regulations are now on the championships website – which you can always get to from the link on the right. There is also information on which teams have so far won places through the qualifying races and an on-line entry form. Although some places are reserved for qualifying teams there are still others available by direct entry and the race is open to all with some AR experience. This includes international teams as it’s not a ‘closed championships’.

The next qualifying race in the series is the 3rd ACE Race on the weekend of July 27/28th in the S.W. of England and we’ll be there to cover it and bring you reports and pictures. SleepMonsters.com will also be providing the live web coverage of the Championship Final in Wales.
