Entires Open for the Feel Good Ultra – The Surf Coast Century
Press Release / 02.04.2024
Entries are now open to the 2024 Surf Coast Century on Saturday 21 September in Anglesea along the Great Ocean Road region of Victora – the feel good ultra!
For 13 years, the Surf Coast Century has shown us the highs and lows of what trail runners can achieve on this incredible course, as it solidifies its’ reputation as one of Australia’s premier ultra trail marathons.
The event offers 100km individual and 100km relay teams of two, three, or four runners; and a revamped 50km run now over the first half of the 100km course - last used in 2016.
The 2024 edition of the event also stands as the Australian Ultra Runners Association (AURA) Long Course Trail National Championships for the 100km race.
Competitors will undertake a magnificent journey below towering sea cliffs, along remote beaches and through extensive wildflower hinterland that leaves you breathless for the beauty of the area as much as for the exertion of the exercise.
It’s often referred to as a bucket-list event for ultra trail runners, thanks to the welcoming environment on and off the course;
“The Century continues to offer so much more than just an achievable and varied course – it takes competitors on a spectacular journey with stunning views matched with a welcoming atmosphere and friendly camaraderie throughout,” said Sam Maffett, General Manager at Rapid Ascent. “And we encourage all keen runners to be part of all this and more in September!”
The event has a great reputation as the ideal place to run your first ultra marathon with a relatively flat and non-technical course; seven checkpoints evenly spread along the route; and superior support services and competitor care.
It’s no surprises that past participants and previous winners have fond memories of the race;
“I wouldn’t have pushed so hard if it wasn’t such a nice place to be it was amazing, especially the people on course - everyone is really friendly making it a great day out.” - Andy McConnell, 2023 Surf Coast Century male winner.
“It’s a perfect ultra for first timers – great manageable trails, well marked and spectacular views; generous cut-off times and overall a great atmosphere – highly recommend this one!”– Grant, 2021 solo participant.
“It’s an amazing course and wonderfully run event!” – Jamie Bergman, 2023 Surf Coast Century female winner.
The Surf Coast Shire continues to play a supportive role in the iconic event boasting a course that encapsulates the breathtaking natural beauty of Victoria’s surf coast region.
Torquay-based event organisers Rapid Ascent will also be continuing its’ partnerships with local groups Meli, and The Friends of the Eastern Otways.
The figure-8 course design course takes 100km competitors from Anglesea to Torquay along the beach, returning along the cliff top tracks and hinterland trails to Moggs Creek and Aireys Inlet; before heading back to Anglesea on the Surf Coast Walk trail, via Point Roadknight. With the 50km now doing the first half of the 100km course, rather than the second half used in 2017 to 2023.
